The lesson in the attached word doc allows for students to discover the relationship of an ellipses foci by drawing their own ellipses by using a string attached at the two focal points as their compass. They then derive the formula for the ellipse itself. This lesson is a fantastic supplemental lesson to ellipses, and I’ve found it better do it after they’ve already learned the basics of how to graph ellipses algebraic/graphically.
