When introducing the difference and proper usage of Mean and Median, I describe a room in which there are 16 students, each of which has their phone out and checking instagram, and each of the students has instagram 300 followers. What is the mean and median followers of this data?
Then in walks Beyonce, who takes her phone out, goes on Instagram. She has 82,000,000 followeres. What is the mean followers now? What is the median?(The new mean is roughly 5 million followers, the new median is the same as before) Which represents the group as whole better, the mean or median.
This is a simple way to show how much outliers effect data, and when outliers are present, the median better represents the data.
