One thing I like to do after a few lessons on slope–and when I feel my students have relatively mastered the concept–is I’ll give them a 1 or 2 point extra credit homework assignment to write a quick report on all the possibilities of why the letter to symbolize slope is m. Since there really is no definitive reason, all the possibilities tends to spark a solid discussion the next day in class.
