Deriving Trig Formulas (lesson)

Student teams work on figuring out derivations for the double angle and half-angle formulas using the sum and product formulas. (for full lesson w/handouts check the attached file)

Main Standard
T11.0 Students demonstrate an understanding of the of half-angle and double-angle formulas for sines and cosines and can use those formulas to prove and/or simplify other trigonometric identities.

Materials
Copies of Deriving the Double-Angle and Half-Angle Formulas

Teacher Directions

Place students in teams of 4. Pass out activity sheet, Deriving the Double-Angle and Half-Angle Formulas. Have students teams follow the direction on the sheet. Note, you may want to stop several times to discuss as a class answers to the questions. Some of the sheet you may want to assign for homework.
