This is a fantastic quick lesson gem/activity that can be used for ten minutes of a percent lesson. The attachment below provides different pictures of products and challenges the class to decide whether a $20 off or a 20% off coupon would save them the most money. Here are the teacher directions, check the attachment below for the pictures..

Teacher Directions: (Adapted from Dan Meyer’s Dueling Discounts by S.M.)

      1.       Teacher shows this image to the class.

      2.       Then, either have students to think-pair-share, or do a quick-write in the notebook.  (3-4 minutes)

      3.       Have students to take a vote as to which coupon is a better one to use.  How many of you think the first coupon is a better one to use? How many of you think it is the second one you should use? Who thinks that you do not know? How come? Eventually students will realize that it depends on the price of the item you want to buy.  * Steps 1 through 3 can be used as an introductory part of the unit. Revisit at the end of the unit with the images of items with prices.

      4.       Next, teacher will present different images with different prices. And students will decide which coupon they should use for each item. After a few examples(exercises), teacher may pose a question; “Is there a situation where it does not matter which one you use?”  (This happens when the item is $100, which is the item F- the desk.)Have students think-pair-share.

      5.       If the teacher feels that their students are ready for extension questions, have students try the two extension questions. These may be used as a writing prompt. The first question should be easy for everyone.
