      Descartes, “the father of modern philosophy,” also contributed much to mathematics. It’s said that he spent the cold winter of 1619 with the Bavarian army, where he often lay in bed until ten in the morning, thinking out problems. During which time he discovered the polyhedral formula (usually named for Euler) v + f = e +2.
