Hook: (1 Day)
Scale drawings. Use the black and white architect’s drawing of Disneyland’s “it’s a Small World” (attached-> http://auhsdmath.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/77660339/F1-HookSmall%20World%20Scale%20Drawing.pdf).
Cut up the original drawing into pieces and divide among students. Give them a piece of graph paper and ask them to reproduce their part of the drawing, but enlarge it such that one square on the original drawing becomes 4 squares on their graph paper.
Have students join their drawings together to see if the picture still “works.” Discuss the idea of scale or enlarging/shrinking. Why is it important to know what the scale of something is? (i.e. blueprint, map, etc.)
What is the scale of the new drawing? Choose a piece of the drawing as a focus. Are the lengths proportional between the two drawings? Are the areas proportional between the two drawings? Do the proportions for length and area match? **Don’t use rulers for this exercise; simply use the boxes to count. Use estimation for partial boxes.
